First Online: February 22,2007
Page Last Updated: September 07,2008

The Nizams ruled the state of Hyderabad from 1724 to 1949. The first Nizams ruled on behalf of the Moguls, but after the  death of Aurangzeb, the Nizams split away to formed their own kingdom, called Nizamate. Their rule continued until the British who allowed the Nizams to rule their Princely States. This was accepted by the Nizams and  they retained power over Hyderabad state till Indian independence (1947).

There were rumors that the Nizamates would side with Pakistan during the Partition, but eventually, the state of  Hyderabad merged with India.
